Bone and soft tissue grafting
Why do I need a bone graft?
Sometimes there isn’t enough bone in your jaws to hold the implant in place. Grafting the area with some other bone from your body will give bone volume and density.
When is the bone grafting done?
The bone grafting can be performed at the same time the implant is put in or a few months before the implant is put in. It all depends on how much bone is required to put in the area.
Where do you get the bone from?
The bone used for the grafting can be harvested from another area in the jaw or from the hip. We sometimes combine it with other synthetic grafting materials to reduce its deterioration.
Where does the bone go?
The harvested bone will be placed around the deficient area.
Where will I have my bone graft surgery?
The surgery will be performed under general anaesthetic in a private hospital in Canberra.
How long is the recovery after bone graft surgery?
The recovery can take between 5-7 days, depending on how much bone is harvested and the site of harvest.
We generally suggest you go on a soft food diet, have regular Savacol mouthwashes to keep the mouth clean.
Dr Ragu will prescribe medication to relieve pain and discomfort during the recovery process. You should be able to return to work 2 days after the procedure, however discomfort levels will vary depending on the individual and also the extent of grafting required.
