Dental Implants
What is a dental implant?
The dental implant is a titanium screw which is placed into the bone. It functions like the root of a tooth or as a structural support for the overlying crown of the tooth. Implants can be used for replacing single or multiple teeth.
Once the implant is placed into the jaw bone, it will take 3-6 months to fuse with the bone. Once it has healed with the bone, the tooth/crown will be inserted.
Why do I need dental implants?
Dental implants are an excellent option for replacing missing teeth, particularly if you want something more rigid and fixed compared to a denture.
How do you place a dental implant?
The procedure will be done under a general anaesthetic or a local anaesthetic depending on the patient's desires and the number of implants required. A small cut is made in the gums, to allow the implant to be screwed into the bone. The gum is then sewn over to cover the implant to facilitate healing.
What does dental implant surgery involve?
You will first have a consultation with Dr Ragu where he will assess your mouth clinically and radiologically. You will need a 3D bone scan to assess the bone quality and quantity. Based on the bone quantity and quality, Dr Ragu can recommend the best type of implants to place in your mouth. Bone grafting may be required if you do not have enough bone. Dr Ragu will then work closely with your dentist or specialist restorative dentist to coordinate a treatment plan that will give you the best aesthetic and functional outcome.
Where will I have my dental implant surgery?
If the implant surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, the surgery will be performed at one of the private hospitals in Canberra. If the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic it will be performed at the Canberra OMFC.
How long is the recovery after placement of a dental implant?
Recovery times vary depending on the individual. The number of implants placed and whether bone grafting is required can also contribute to recovery times. Generally, after 3-5 days most people are pain-free and can eat normally. Adequate pain relief will be prescribed.
