Genioplasty

Corrective Jaw Surgery Canberra OMFC Dr Ragu Krishnamoorthy

What is genioplasty?

A genioplasty is a surgery which is performed to adjust the shape, size and symmetry of the chin to give you a better cosmetic facial profile.

You can have a sliding genioplasty in which you cut and move the existing chin bone or you can have a biocompatible implant which is screwed into your existing chin bone.

Genioplasty procedure is often performed in conjunction with your corrective jaw surgery to help improve the facial profile.

Why should I have genioplasty?

You may desire a genioplasty if you feel your chin is too small or too big or if it is not symmetrical with your face.

What does genioplasty surgery involve?

Small cuts are made on the inside of your mouth so you have no scars on your face. The chin bone is exposed and cut so that it can be moved and adjusted into the correct position. The chin bone will be held in place with a small plate and screw. The gums will then be stitched with dissolvable stitches.

Where will I have my genioplasty surgery?

Your surgery will be performed in a private hospital in Canberra.

How long is the recovery after genioplasty?

Generally people have minimal pain after a genioplasty procedure. You will stay in hospital overnight and when you are comfortable with your eating and drinking you will be discharged.

There will be minimal swelling and bruising in the region which will disappear after 1-2 weeks.

Your stitches will take 1-2 weeks to dissolve and it is important you keep it clean with gentle tooth brushing and mouth-washing.

We suggest you place ice packs over the region and also sleep at a 45-degree elevation to help with the swelling.
